End Evil

Tories are truly the scum of the earth. Self-serving, selfish, greedy and grasping they will clamber over anyone and anything to protect their wealth and to accumulate more. The Conservative Party in the UK, much like the Republican Party in the US, are committed to safeguarding the capitalist system that has made them rich. Their essential argument is that those who have 'earned' their wealth should not be asked to help those who haven't. They would prefer to see people homeless, poor healthcare and low standards of education than pay more tax. Due to the fact they will spend huge sums of money on private education and healthcare for their own families, it is pretty clear that the real issue for them is the idea of having to pay for someone else. I believe the whole right-wing ideology can be reduced to selfishness.

Tories also understand the basic truth of the capitalist system. The misconception that the general public are fed is that if they work hard enough any of them can 'make it' and become rich. This is a lie, in order for the few to enjoy mega-rich lifestyles there must be a broad base of poor people underneath them who are essentially footing the bill for their extravagance. The ludicrous wages earned by a very small minority of the population are undeserved, in fact they cannot be justified in any terms as far as I am concerned - why does anyone need that much money? They don't, and at the high end of the scale this continued accumulation is more about power than wealth. Wealth on a large enough scale seems to ensure that you get the attention you want, incredibly influential people (for influential read rich) get access to all the top politicians. This is obviously anti-democratic, the richer that you are, the more your voice is heard and the more influence it has on the way our country is run.

The Tories under Thatcher were the scariest blight to afflict Britain since the Norman invasion. They successfully broke the back of the manufacturing industry, killed the trade union movement, sold off virtually all of the council housing stock and privatised everything in sight. Like Gecko stripping the assets of a company in the movie Wall Street, Thatcher stripped the entire country while in office. People were reduced to economic units, told they should be prepared to move anywhere for a job, that they should have no roots and the result? All sense of community dies in these conditions, people become more insular. Maggie even stopped free milk in schools earning herself the moniker 'Maggie Thatcher the milk snatcher' amongst others.

The Tories combined this capitalisation of society with a negative media campaign aiming to undermine anyone with a different point of view from them. They used every negative tactic in the book to attack the members of society they saw as leeching away their 'hard-earned' fortune - single mothers, refugees, children, the working classes, the homeless, the unemployed and the elderly. All of the people incapable of protecting themselves, all the people with the least political representation and the weakest voice in the media, the people most in need of help.

While cutting expenditure on all manner of social, health and educational services they spent more and more on the military, on subsidies to attract foreign companies and on supposedly making Britain more competitive in the world economy. From the poll tax to tighter immigration laws all of their policies were thinly veiled attempts at polarising wealth further, at making the rich richer and blaming the poor for their own predicament, as though their poverty proved they didn't deserve better as they obviously weren't working hard enough. They would site highly unlikely examples like Richard Branson, going from poverty to mega-wealth as proof that anyone could do this, as though effort and not opportunity would guarantee you a good living.

Tories are dangerous creatures although recently their obvious lack of sanity and humanity has ensured that power is out with their reach. Unfortunately Tony and New Labour have stepped into the evil void left behind. Already we are seeing a continuation of what Thatcher started, with Blair working towards a Britain free of manufacturing jobs, with a two-tier health care system and a lack of social conscience. Like the Iron Lady with doddery, old Reagan, he has concentrated on sucking up to George Bush over getting on with the rest of Europe (you know the continent we are actually a part of). He has also continued to heavily subsidise big business and to lead Britain to war. I'm sure the old bitch is proud.
